FAQ

Welcome to the Curling FAQ page! Whether you’re new to curling or a seasoned player, this section is designed to answer all your questions about the sport, membership options, league schedules, and what to expect at the Markdale Curling Club.

From basic rules to tips for beginners, you’ll find everything you need to get started and enjoy your time on the ice. Let’s make your curling experience both fun and easy to navigate!

I have never curled before which league should I join?

All of our recreational leagues welcome new curlers and have lots of people who are new to curling.

I am not sure whether to join full time or buy a 6 pack?

The 6-pack is a NEW offering – it contains 6 coupons for 1 curling game each and can be used at any time in any league. If you are really not sure, buy a 6 pack and if you use all of them up you can buy another one. Our full time membership is discounted for first-timers so it’s also a good (and reasonably priced) way to also get started.

What equipment do I need?

Clean, clean, clean shoes (running shoes are fine). Warm and comfortable clothing. Having your own broom or push stick is recommended. The club does have some loaner equipment but we are discouraging sharing of equipment at this time. If anyone does use club equipment, we are requesting them to sanitize it before and after use and ensure they (and only they) use that piece of equipment during the game. We are offering good pricing on equipment orders through our club from Goldline.

Where can I buy curling equipment?

Equipment order forms will be available at the club from the Goldline catalog and the club will place a bulk order for members. Pricing is as listed in the catalog BUT NO HST or Shipping will be applied on top so there is a good price advantage. We will submit an early bulk order to ensure the stuff gets to us for the start of the season. We will likely submit another order in early November as well. You will be asked to pay for your order when the equipment arrives at the club. You can also purchase curling equipment at most sporting goods stores, online through the different major brands or at specialized curling supply stores.

Is there a PROBUS league?

The Friday afternoon timeslot which used to be called the Probus league is now open to all club members but will have lots of Probus members participating. In fact many of our club members are Probus members and curl in many of
our leagues. All curlers must be registered members of the club including those buying 6-packs.

Will instruction be available for new curlers?

Learn to curl clinics are scheduled and are intended for members. If someone just wants to try curling before becoming a member, then they should come to one of the two open houses instead. The clinics are free for members.

There are 2 clinics scheduled and sign up sheets will be posted. If we fill up or there is more demand we may see about adding additional clinics. The open houses do not require sign-up and are also free and people can register as club members at those if they are undecided now. Most of our learning is doing while playing and through the help and support of our more experienced curlers.
