About Us
Our History
Curling has deep roots in Markdale, with the Markdale Curling Club officially founded in 1922. This was made possible by the generosity of Thomas H. Reburn, who donated property along what is now Highway 10. The original facility included a rink, a club room, and a cozy waiting room with a glass partition, allowing spectators to watch the games while staying warm. Initially, curling in Markdale was a sport reserved exclusively for men. However, in January 1945, the club took a significant step forward by opening its doors to women, hosting the first-ever Ladies Night, which became a turning point in the club’s inclusivity. In 1954, the introduction of artificial ice revolutionized the game in Markdale, allowing for a longer and more reliable curling season, regardless of the weather.
Two clubs amalgamated
By 1964, the club had outgrown its original home and purchased a new property on Toronto Street North. A modern curling facility was built at the east end, near Edith Street. Around the same time, Centre Grey Builders began work on what would become the Centre Grey Golf Course, located adjacent to the curling club. In 1965, the two clubs recognized the benefits of uniting their resources and offerings, leading to the formation of the Markdale Country Club. Over time, this partnership evolved, and the combined facility became known as the Markdale Golf & Curling Club.
Today, the Markdale Golf & Curling Club operates as a not-for-profit organization that is run by a dedicated Board of Directors. We rely heavily on the hard work and commitment of volunteers from the community to keep the club running. From organizing events to maintaining the facilities, the passion and involvement of our members are at the heart of everything we do. For over a century, the Markdale Golf & Curling Club has been a hub for sport, community, and camaraderie. Through countless games, tournaments, and social events, the club has played a key role in fostering friendships and strengthening the local community.
We continue to honor the legacy of our founders while looking to the future, with recent renovations and exciting initiatives ensuring the club’s success for generations to come.
