The Women of the Markdale Golf & Curling Club hit the ice and made an incredible impact at the Ruby Jubilee Ladies Invitational Bonspiel on Saturday, November 23, 2024, raising a remarkable $3,210.25 for the Women’s Centre Grey Bruce.
In a moment of unity and purpose, Bonspiel co-chair Heather Reed presented the cheque to Stacey Barry, Fund Development and Communications Manager for the Women’s Centre, on Monday, November 25th, a date that holds special significance as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Marking a Milestone in Women’s Curling
This inaugural event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a celebration of 80 years of women’s curling in Markdale and the 40th anniversary of the Markdale Ladies League. Through a silent auction and raffle, contributions poured in from 35 local businesses and 8 individual donors, showcasing the spirit of generosity within our community.
🏅 Curling Highlights
The Bonspiel brought together 16 teams and 64 curlers from across southern and central Ontario for two draws, featuring friendly competition and camaraderie:
- 🥇 First Draw Winners: Stayner team
- 🥇 Second Draw Winners: Thornhill team
A special thank-you to event co-chairs Heather Reed, Christine Mongeau, and Kathy May, whose leadership and dedication made the day unforgettable.
Supporting a Vital Cause
The funds raised will help the Women’s Centre Grey Bruce provide critical services, including shelter, counselling, safety planning, and support for women, children, and youth affected by abuse in our region.
This event is a reminder of the power of sport to bring communities together for meaningful causes. Thank you to everyone who participated, donated, and supported the Ruby Jubilee Bonspiel. Together, we are making a difference!
Let’s continue to stand united for a brighter, safer future.
